Description:
Instruction drawings created in a graphical style to communicate a technical process clearly and universally.
Concept:
A UK-based engineering company required a set of nine easy-to-follow illustrations demonstrating how to bond high-tensile steel cable. The instructions were designed for engineers working on site across multiple global locations. To address language and cultural differences, the illustrations needed to communicate the full process visually, without reliance on written instructions.
Styling:
The visual style was informed by a previous commission for Nottinghamshire County Council, in which lead illustrator Adrian Cartwright developed a contemporary, graphic interpretation of traditional technical illustration. The approach using Adobe illustrator combines bold outlines with lighter fills, sometimes omitting interior line-work entirely and instead relying on tone and colour to define form. This results in illustrations that feel accessible and modern while retaining clarity and depth.
Notes:
The use of a limited colour palette was a key constraint, helping to ensure consistency and clarity. As is often the case, this restriction contributed to the development of a distinctive visual style in its own right.
